Holland Man Accused of Passport Fraud & Identity Theft

HOLLAND, OH – Wael Ahmed Hageali, 44, of Holland, Ohio, is facing federal charges after an indictment was filed accusing him of identity theft and making false statements to the U.S. government. The charges stem from alleged actions taken on March 17, 2014, according to a statement released today by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio.

United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach announced the indictment, detailing accusations that Hageali knowingly provided false information on a passport application. The indictment further alleges aggravated identity theft – a charge that carries significant penalties if proven. Details regarding the specific false statements made on the application remain sealed, but the Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security led the investigation.

Federal prosecutors are tight-lipped about the specifics of the case, but sources within the Bureau of Diplomatic Security indicate the investigation has been ongoing for some time. The nature of the alleged identity theft wasn’t immediately clear, but aggravated identity theft typically involves the use of another person’s identifying information in connection with other criminal activity.

If convicted on these charges, the sentence for Wael Hageali will be determined by the court, taking into account his criminal history (if any), his role in the alleged offense, and the details of the violations. Prosecutors cautioned, however, that any sentence handed down will not exceed the statutory maximum, and will likely be less.

Assistant United States Attorney Noah P. Hood is leading the prosecution in this case. The government bears the burden of proving Hageali’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial, and the defendant is entitled to a full and fair defense. An indictment is merely an accusation, not proof of wrongdoing.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system. The Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security has not released further comment at this time. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the Bureau directly.
