Hopkinsville Man Pleads Guilty to Church Statue Decapitation

Paducah, KY – Marley R. Taylor, 27, from Hopkinsville, has pleaded guilty to the federal crime of damaging religious property. The grim act, which shook the local community, involved the violent decapitation of a statue of Mary and Jesus at a Catholic church using an axe.

U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson of the FBI Louisville Field Office, and Chief Jason Newby of the Hopkinsville Police Department stood together to announce the charges against Taylor. The statue was a hand-carved marble piece imported from Italy, a tragic loss for the local congregation.

In a stunning admission, Taylor confessed that his intention was to remove the heads of both statues due to his belief that people worshipped them. His sentencing is scheduled for March 10, 2026, where he faces up to three years in prison and a restitution fee of at least $35,935.

Assistant Attorney General Dhillon emphasized the intolerable nature of such acts, stating that the Department of Justice stands firm against anti-Christian bias and will hold accountable anyone who targets Americans based on their religious beliefs. U.S. Attorney Bumgarner echoed these sentiments, declaring that no attack on religion would be tolerated in Kentucky.

Special Agent Olson highlighted the violation of constitutional rights by Taylor’s actions, underscoring the FBI’s dedication to protecting American citizens’ rights under the U.S. Constitution. Chief Newby expressed gratitude for federal support in safeguarding Hopkinsville residents and vowed to maintain a safe community.

This disturbing case is being investigated by the FBI Bowling Green Satellite Office and the Hopkinsville Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Raymond McGee and Trial Attorney Julia White handling the prosecution.
