Idaho 2020: Violent Crime Rates Taper, Property Crimes on the Rise

Idaho’s 2020 crime landscape saw a significant shift, with violent crime rates slowing their ascent while property crime rates continued to rise, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. The state’s overall violent crime rate, which includes murder, non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, declined by 1.5% from 2019, bucking the national trend of rising violent crime rates.

The trend in Idaho aligns with national statistics, which showed a 5.2% increase in violent crime rates nationwide in 2020. However, Idaho’s rate, at approximately 3.44 per 1,000 inhabitants, remained below the national average. The state’s decline in violent crime can be attributed to a decrease in aggravated assault rates, which fell by 3.8% compared to the previous year.

Property crimes, on the other hand, accounted for the majority of reported offenses in Idaho. Burglary and larceny-theft rates increased by 5.5% and 7.3%, respectively, from 2019. Motor vehicle theft rates also saw a notable rise, climbing by 10.3% over the same period. The state’s overall property crime rate increased by 6.5% in 2020, outpacing the national rate of 5.6%. Arson rates also rose by 10.1%
