SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Amy Ward, 30, of Rushville, is facing a reckoning after admitting to a brazen scheme to steal nearly half a million dollars from her former employer, Marty Turner Farms. Ward pled guilty yesterday to one count of bank fraud, a federal charge carrying a hefty potential sentence. The case, investigated by the FBI and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, reveals a calculated betrayal of trust.
According to court documents, Ward began her employment as a bookkeeper for the Beardstown farm in September 2010. The Turners, owners of the farm, routinely left pre-signed checks with Ward when traveling, trusting her to handle vendor payments. This practice, intended for convenience, became the foundation for Ward’s years-long deception.
Beginning in late March 2011 and continuing until May 2015, Ward exploited this trust. She systematically wrote the pre-signed checks not to legitimate vendors, but to herself and her husband. These checks, totaling $486,510, were then endorsed and deposited into an account shared by the couple. To cover her tracks, Ward meticulously falsified entries in the farm’s accounting software, disguising the fraudulent payments as legitimate expenses. A total of 107 fraudulent checks were issued.
The scheme unraveled in May 2015 when Ward was confronted by the Turners. Facing exposure, she admitted to the embezzlement. While the statutory maximum penalty for bank fraud is up to 30 years behind bars – a figure provided by the Department of Justice – the actual sentence will be determined by the court, factoring in sentencing guidelines and other legal considerations. Restitution is also likely to be ordered.
Ward waived her right to an indictment and entered the guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Tom Schanzle-Haskins. She was released on bond and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 27, 2017. Assistant U.S. Attorney Victor B. Yanz is leading the prosecution, seeking justice for the defrauded farmers.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of businesses to internal theft. The Turners placed their faith in Ward, and she repaid it with calculated fraud. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing, providing updates as they become available.
