Iowa Meth Kingpin Rothkehl Gets 10+ Years

GEORGE, IOWA – John Rothkehl, Jr., 40, of George, Iowa, is headed to federal prison for over a decade after pleading guilty to a meth trafficking conspiracy that saturated a small Iowa town. Rothkehl was sentenced August 21, 2025, to 130 months – more than 10 years – by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.

The case, built on evidence gathered between January 2022 and October 2024, revealed Rothkehl’s central role in distributing at least 150 grams of pure methamphetamine. Law enforcement documented a September 2024 deal where Rothkehl directly supplied meth to a confidential informant. The operation culminated in an October 2024 traffic stop where a K-9 unit flagged the vehicle Rothkehl was riding in. A search turned up over 35 grams of pure methamphetamine stashed in the backseat, directly linked to Rothkehl and his intent to distribute.

But the haul didn’t stop there. During his arrest, Rothkehl was found concealing a fentanyl pill in his underwear, adding another layer to his criminal activity. Investigators pieced together evidence showing Rothkehl routinely made trips to Spencer, Iowa, and South Sioux City, Nebraska, to source the methamphetamine he then pushed within the George, Iowa, area. He wasn’t just a user; he was a supplier, a key cog in the regional drug trade.

“This isn’t some small-time operation,” stated a source close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Rothkehl was actively working to flood a community with a dangerous and addictive substance. The amount of meth he was dealing with, combined with the fentanyl, shows a blatant disregard for public safety.” Rothkehl will serve a five-year term of supervised release after completing his prison sentence – a meaningless gesture in a federal system without parole.

The investigation was a massive undertaking by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, a multi-agency coalition including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Sioux City Police, Homeland Security Investigations, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, South Sioux City Police, Nebraska State Patrol, Iowa National Guard, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, United States Marshals Service, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Shawn Wehde and Kraig R. Hamit prosecuted the case. Rothkehl is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals awaiting transfer to a federal correctional facility.
