New York Attorney General Letitia James has scored a significant win in the battle to save AmeriCorps programs, securing the continuation of vital services that support over 200,000 volunteers nationwide.
The lawsuit filed by AG James and a coalition of 24 states was prompted by the Trump administration’s decision to cancel approximately 80 percent of AmeriCorps grants and place hundreds in administrative leave. This action resulted in a funding shortfall that threatened the existence of these programs.
Thanks to the legal challenge, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has agreed to release over $184 million, including $14.7 million for projects in New York. This financial lifeline ensures that volunteers and staff will be compensated for their work this year and guarantees the continuation of services into the next federal fiscal year.
“This is an important victory for the dedicated AmeriCorps volunteers across the country and the communities they serve each and every day,” AG James stated. “For decades, AmeriCorps has provided critical programs that provide education, healthcare, and other vital services to those in need.”
AmeriCorps, an independent federal agency since 1993, supports over 200,000 unpaid members annually, serving communities across the United States. Members of AmeriCorps operate various programs including disaster relief, anti-poverty initiatives, education, environmental protection, community health, and veterans’ support.
In New York, the Commission on National and Community Service administers AmeriCorps programs that provide critical services at over 300 locations throughout the state. These services include tutoring and mentorship for students, housing and legal assistance, environmental restoration, support for veterans and military families, opioid addiction services, and more.
The lawsuit filed in June secured a court order halting the Trump administration’s efforts to close AmeriCorps programs and requiring the reinstatement of thousands of volunteers. The coalition also challenged OMB’s attempts to gut AmeriCorps programs, leading to the full release of previously withheld funds.
