James Stops Illegal DOE Energy Funding Cuts

New York – In a pivotal victory for the state’s energy initiatives, Attorney General Letitia James has successfully challenged and overturned the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) arbitrary funding cuts. The U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon ruled in favor of the State, declaring the DOE’s cap on state energy program funds as unlawful.

“My office has once again thwarted the federal government’s attempt to cut off critical funding New Yorkers need,” said Attorney General James. “These programs are vital for keeping energy affordable and secure.”

The court’s decision was a result of a lawsuit filed by AG James, along with 18 other state attorneys general and two governors, against the DOE. The suit argued that the DOE policy, which capped reimbursements at 10% of project budgets, violated federal law and threatened millions in funding.

New York was at risk of losing approximately $1.6 million, impacting 26 staff positions crucial for the state’s energy resilience. This funding supports critical operations like preparing for extreme weather, electricity pricing, and grid stability drills.

Joining the lawsuit were attorneys general from Colorado, Minnesota, Oregon, California, and others, along with governors from Kentucky and Pennsylvania. The ruling ensures New York can continue delivering cleaner, safer, and more affordable energy to its communities.

This victory is a testament to AG James’ dedication to protecting New Yorkers and their essential services from federal overreach.
