BUFFALO, N.Y. – Matthew Rudy, 43, of Jamestown, New York, will spend the next five years in federal prison for his role in concealing a brutal murder. U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Rudy was sentenced to 60 months by Senior U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny after being convicted of being an accessory after the fact.
The grim details revealed in court paint a picture of calculated violence and desperate cover-ups. On May 27, 2014, Anthony Neubauer lured Joseph Anthony with the false promise of cocaine, driving him from Jamestown to property owned by Rudy in Pennsylvania. The ruse was a setup. Once across state lines, Neubauer and Rudy confessed they had no drugs, then executed Anthony with a gunshot, burying his body on Rudy’s land.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael J. Adler and Timothy C. Lynch laid out the motive: Anthony was believed to be cooperating with authorities. Neubauer and Rudy decided to silence him permanently, and Rudy willingly provided the location – and the means – to make it happen. The pair then attempted to bury both the body and the truth, hoping to escape justice.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Jamestown Police Department under Chief Timothy Jackson, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Grimm, slowly unearthed the horrifying truth. Investigators meticulously pieced together evidence, ultimately connecting Rudy to the crime despite his attempts at concealment. The Warren County, PA, District Attorney’s Office also provided crucial assistance in the cross-state investigation.
This sentencing isn’t the end of the line. Anthony Neubauer has already been convicted for his role in Anthony’s murder and is currently awaiting his own sentencing. While justice for Joseph Anthony remains incomplete, the conviction of Matthew Rudy sends a clear message: aiding and abetting a murderer carries severe consequences, regardless of how deeply you try to bury the evidence.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow Neubauer’s sentencing and any further developments in this case. This case highlights the dangers of drug-related violence and the lengths criminals will go to to protect themselves, even if it means silencing a victim and desecrating the land. The full extent of Anthony’s alleged cooperation remains unclear, but the outcome is tragically definitive.
