Jefferson County Felon Bernard James Bell Indicted in Gun Case

A 26-year-old Jefferson County man is facing federal prison after being caught with a firearm tied to a homicide in Beaumont’s violent west end. Bernard James Bell was arrested April 17, 2019, on a criminal complaint charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

Bell was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 1, 2019, in the Eastern District of Texas. The charges stem from an investigation that began April 11, 2019, when law enforcement responded to a homicide in Beaumont. Days later, investigators learned Bell had been given a firearm used in connection with that killing.

After questioning Bell, authorities recovered the weapon and confirmed he had possessed it. Records show Bell has prior felony convictions in Jefferson County from 2011 and 2012. Under federal law, those convictions legally bar him from owning or possessing any firearm or ammunition.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Beaumont Police Department jointly led the investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell James, who is pushing for maximum accountability.

If convicted, Bell faces up to 10 years in federal prison, a lifetime ban on gun ownership, and a permanent criminal record that marks him as a high-risk offender. Sentencing, if found guilty, would be carried out under strict federal guidelines.

Authorities stress that the indictment is not evidence of guilt. Bell is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The case remains active and is progressing through the federal system.
