Jesse Wade Pelkey Gets 28 Years for Meth Conspiracy

Jesse Wade Pelkey, 38, of Imperial Beach, California, is locked up for 336 months—28 years—after a federal court in Honolulu slammed him for running a high-volume methamphetamine pipeline from San Diego to Hawaii. On January 5, 2017, Senior District Judge Helen Gillmor handed down the sentence after Pelkey pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

The case, prosecuted by U.S. Attorney Florence T. Nakakuni’s office, exposed Pelkey as a central figure in a sprawling drug ring that crossed state lines and operated with military precision. Evidence showed he wasn’t just a supplier—he was the San Diego source of supply, directing shipments of crystal meth, known locally as “ice,” to Hawaii for street-level distribution.

Courts found Pelkey responsible for moving 424.9 grams of pure methamphetamine and an additional 4,989 grams of generic meth—nearly five kilos total. The scale of the operation triggered federal enhancements, marking it as a major win for the Drug Enforcement Administration, which led the investigation.

As an organizer and leader of a conspiracy that included five or more members, Pelkey faced stiffer penalties under federal sentencing guidelines. A prior felony drug conviction was used to boost his mandatory minimum from 10 to 20 years—240 months—before Judge Gillmor added eight more years due to his aggravated role.

Altogether, six individuals were convicted in the conspiracy, dismantling a network that exploited air couriers and encrypted communications to move drugs across the Pacific. Prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark A. Inciong, painted a picture of systematic distribution that poisoned communities on both ends of the supply chain.

The 28-year sentence sends a hard message: those who organize and fuel Hawaii’s meth trade will face decades behind bars. For Pelkey, the cost of his empire is a third of a lifetime locked down in federal prison.
