John Edward Burns, a 45-year-old man from Kountze, Texas, was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity, authorities announced today. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone in the Eastern District of Texas, marks the end of a swift but damning federal prosecution.
Burns pleaded guilty on August 16, 2017, to one count of enticement of a minor, admitting to initiating contact through social media and a mobile messaging app with someone he believed to be a 15-year-old girl. In reality, the individual was an undercover investigator working to trap predators who use digital platforms to exploit children.
Court documents reveal that Burns didn’t hesitate. Within days of making contact on July 17, 2017, he pressured the “teen” to send nude photos and began plotting a sexual rendezvous. He arranged to meet her at a park in Beaumont and later take her to a motel in Tyler, Texas, where he intended to have sexual intercourse.
His plan unraveled on July 19, 2017, when Burns arrived at the Beaumont park expecting to meet the minor. Instead, he was met by federal and local law enforcement officers who arrested him on the spot. Investigators say digital evidence, including preserved chat logs, sealed his guilt.
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to combat the surge of online child exploitation. Spearheaded by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), the program coordinates federal, state, and local efforts to dismantle networks of abusers and rescue child victims.
Investigation was led by HSI-ICE, the Beaumont Police Department, and the Texas Attorney General’s office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher T. Tortorice handled the prosecution. Authorities warn that predators like Burns are increasingly using social media to target minors—and that every message could be a trap set by law enforcement.
