BAY CITY — A 21-year-old Blanchard, Michigan, woman has admitted to killing a Native American woman on the Isabella Reservation in a violent stabbing that severed the victim’s femoral artery. Kaden Elizabeth Gilbert pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, marking a grim end to a case that exposed the brutal reality of off-reservation offenders targeting Indigenous victims.
The attack unfolded in November 2020, when Gilbert traveled to the victim’s residence in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, armed with a knife. Without provocation, she intentionally stabbed the woman, slicing through the femoral artery in her leg. The victim bled out rapidly, losing a catastrophic amount of blood before help could arrive. The crime occurred within federal jurisdiction because it took place on tribal land.
Acting U.S. Attorney Saima Mohsin confirmed the plea, emphasizing that Gilbert, a non-Indian, targeted an Indian victim on sovereign tribal territory — a fact that triggers federal jurisdiction under the Major Crimes Act. The Justice Department has increasingly prioritized such cases amid growing scrutiny over violence against Native Americans and jurisdictional gaps in tribal law enforcement.
Gilbert now faces up to life in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for March 3, 2022, at 2 p.m. in U.S. District Court. No plea deal was disclosed, and court records show she entered her plea without conditions, accepting full accountability for the fatal assault.
The investigation was led by the Mount Pleasant Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose joint efforts secured forensic and eyewitness evidence that left no room for doubt. Prosecutors described the act as deliberate and merciless, with the knife used in the attack recovered at the scene.
Assistant United States Attorneys Roy Kranz and J. Michael Buckley are handling the prosecution. As federal authorities prepare for sentencing, the case stands as a stark reminder: violence on tribal land, especially when crossing racial and jurisdictional lines, will be met with the full weight of federal law.
