King Pleads Guilty

A devastating case of public corruption has come to a head in Iowa, as Christine Anne King, 42, from Strawberry Point, Iowa, pleaded guilty to defrauding the city of Masonville of more than $30,000.

King, the former city clerk for Masonville, was convicted of one count of mail fraud in federal court in Cedar Rapids. The plea agreement revealed a shocking pattern of deceit, as King admitted to issuing herself fraudulent payroll and expense reimbursement checks from July 2002 through October 2011.

According to the plea agreement, King’s fraudulent activities were designed to prevent detection by the city council and the Auditor for the State of Iowa. She included fraudulently inflated bank account balances on reports provided to these entities, further solidifying her scheme.

The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, culminated in King’s guilty plea. Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt is prosecuting the case. King remains free on conditions of release pending sentencing, which will be determined by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade after a presentence report is prepared.

King faces a possible maximum sentence of twenty years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. The severity of the potential sentence reflects the gravity of King’s crimes and the impact on the city of Masonville.

The case file, available at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/, is numbered 14-CR-2009. As the community of Masonville comes to terms with the betrayal of trust, the case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of oversight and accountability in public office. The guilty plea marks a significant step towards justice, but the full extent of the consequences will be determined at sentencing.

In the meantime, the people of Masonville can take some solace in the knowledge that those responsible for protecting the public trust are taking action to hold accountable those who would seek to exploit it. The prosecution of Christine Anne King is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement to root out corruption and ensure that public officials are held to the highest standards of integrity.
