Former Gonzales District Fire Chief KRISTOPHER JOHNSON, age 36, of Gonzales, Louisiana, has been convicted of distributing and possessing child pornography, marking a shocking fall from public trust. JOHNSON pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court earlier today to four counts of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession, admitting to a pattern of predatory digital behavior that exploited the most vulnerable.
The case unraveled when federal investigators discovered a Gmail account linked to the address kjohnson@gonzalesfd.com uploading graphic images of child sexual abuse to a cloud-based photo storage platform. Authorities traced the digital footprint back to JOHNSON’s home through Internet Protocol (IP) address logs, triggering a targeted investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Unit.
A search warrant executed at JOHNSON’s residence uncovered damning evidence: child pornography stored on his cell phone and iPad, including explicit images of children as young as six being sexually abused. The material wasn’t passively consumed—JOHNSON admitted to actively seeking out illicit content across multiple websites, engaging in trades via Google services, and even viewing material depicting the child niece of someone he was communicating with online.
Investigators also found proof of distribution: JOHNSON had sent multiple images of minors being sexually abused to another individual through a private texting application. His admissions during interrogation confirmed not only possession but participation in a network that perpetuates the ongoing victimization of children, turning his devices into instruments of exploitation.
“Those who exploit and perpetuate the sexual abuse of children by trading and possessing images of such abuse will continue to be aggressively pursued by this office,” U.S. Attorney Walt Green stated, emphasizing interagency coordination with federal, state, and local law enforcement. The case, he said, reflects an uncompromising stance against those who circulate child sexual abuse material.
The investigation was led by U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (DHS-HSI), and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Unit, with support from the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan R. Crosswell is prosecuting the case. JOHNSON awaits sentencing before U.S. District Judge Shelly D. Dick, where he faces mandatory minimums and a lifetime of federal supervision.
