Lafayette’s streets got a little less dangerous Monday as 21-year-old Shawn D’Anthony Brown was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for illegally carrying a loaded .32 caliber revolver — a weapon he had no legal right to touch. Brown, of Lafayette, Louisiana, admitted guilt in a November 2016 plea deal after cops caught him with the gold spray-painted gun tucked in his front right pocket.
The arrest unfolded on September 27, 2015, when Lafayette Police pulled over a black four-door vehicle traveling without headlights on Celeste Street. What started as a routine traffic stop turned serious when officers searched Brown and found the loaded firearm. No shots were fired, but the moment confirmed what federal prosecutors feared: a repeat offender back in circulation, armed and dangerous.
Brown pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm — a federal felony charge triggered by his prior convictions. U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter handed down the 21-month sentence and added three years of supervised release, a move aimed at monitoring Brown’s steps the second he walks out of prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. McCoy, who emphasized the threat posed by felons reacquiring firearms. “This isn’t just about a traffic stop,” McCoy said in court documents. “This is about stopping a pattern before it turns deadly.”
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Lafayette Police Department. It falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative designed to crack down on illegal gun possession by violent offenders and disrupt the cycle of firearm-related crime.
Federal authorities stress that possession alone — even without pulling the trigger — carries steep consequences. For Shawn D’Anthony Brown, that reality just sank in: 21 months behind bars, all for carrying a gun he wasn’t allowed to own. The message from the DOJ? If you’re a felon, touching a firearm means doing time.
