LAREDO, Texas – A pair of Laredo residents are facing a long stretch behind bars after being convicted of orchestrating a brazen attempt to smuggle 19 kilograms of high-purity methamphetamine across the border from Mexico. The sentences, handed down this week, send a clear message: move dope through South Texas, and you’ll pay the price.
Antonio Ruiz, 37, and Timothy Andrew Hernandez, 24, both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import a controlled substance. Ruiz entered his plea on November 9, 2022, while Hernandez followed suit on December 1, 2022. U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez wasn’t feeling charitable. Ruiz received a staggering 30-year sentence, while Hernandez will spend 130 months in federal prison.
The operation, which unfolded on May 7, 2022, involved an undercover agent posing as a driver. Ruiz believed he’d hired the agent and directed him to deliver the meth-laden truck to a pre-designated location. He then enlisted Hernandez to pick up the vehicle. Ruiz wasn’t content to simply delegate; he actively oversaw the exchange, guiding Hernandez and monitoring the driver’s progress. The plan: transfer the drugs to another vehicle for transport deeper into the U.S. interior.
When Hernandez arrived, the undercover agent revealed the hidden compartment containing the 99% pure methamphetamine. It was a substantial haul, and the consequences are equally significant. Judge Alvarez didn’t pull punches, noting Ruiz’s extensive criminal history dating back to age 18. She also sharply criticized Ruiz for leading Hernandez down a criminal path instead of steering him clear. Ruiz’s courtroom complaint that he wasn’t a “drug man” and the sentence was too harsh fell on deaf ears. “Sometimes it’s enough if you do it just once,” the judge retorted.
Arrest warrants were issued for both men, with Hernandez taken into custody on July 7, 2022, and Ruiz on September 9, 2022. They remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. This bust was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with crucial assistance from Customs and Border Protection, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the United Independent School District Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Homero Ramirez successfully prosecuted the case, securing convictions and lengthy sentences for both defendants. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case, and others like it, as federal law enforcement cracks down on the flow of illicit drugs across the southern border. This isn’t just about locking up criminals; it’s about stemming the tide of poison that’s destroying communities.
