Leetonia Mail Carrier Indicted in Workers’ Comp Scam

LEETONIA, OH – Jess A. Leon, 66, of Leetonia, is facing federal charges after a grand jury indictment revealed a scheme to defraud the federal workers’ compensation system, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio announced today. Leon, a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, is accused of pocketing benefits he wasn’t entitled to, all while allegedly continuing to earn income from undisclosed sources.

The four-count indictment, handed down earlier this week, accuses Leon of both theft of government property and making false statements to obtain federal employee’s compensation. According to the charges, Leon failed to report additional income earned while simultaneously collecting workers’ compensation payments – a blatant attempt to double-dip at taxpayer expense. The indictment further alleges Leon lied about the extent of his physical limitations to continue receiving these benefits.

Acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja’s office isn’t detailing the amount of money Leon allegedly defrauded the system, but sources close to the investigation suggest the scheme went on for a significant period. The U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General spearheaded the investigation, uncovering what they believe is a calculated effort to exploit the workers’ compensation program.

Assistant United States Attorney Megan R. Miller will be leading the prosecution. If convicted on all counts, Leon could face a substantial prison sentence and be ordered to repay the full amount of the fraudulently obtained benefits. However, Sierleja’s office cautions that the final sentence will be determined after considering a range of factors, including any prior criminal history and the specifics of Leon’s involvement.

“The system is designed to protect workers legitimately injured on the job,” a source within the Inspector General’s office told Grimy Times. “Exploiting that system, especially when it involves dishonesty and theft from federal funds, will not be tolerated. We will aggressively pursue these cases.”

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Jess A. Leon is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. He is entitled to a full and fair trial, where the prosecution must present compelling evidence to secure a conviction. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments as they unfold.
