Leshawn Lawson, a 41-year-old Hayward resident, was sentenced to 214 months—over 17 years—in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute nearly 10 kilograms of high-purity cocaine. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton, marks the end of a years-long federal case that began with a routine traffic stop in Livermore, California.
On that day, a Livermore police officer pulled over a white Bentley driven by Lawson. Inside the vehicle, officers seized more than $10,000 in cash and discovered packaging materials in the trunk indicating space for ten kilograms of cocaine. Forensic testing later confirmed 9,957 grams of cocaine at 87.6% purity—enough to fuel hundreds of street-level deals across the Bay Area.
Court documents show Lawson admitted he knew a controlled substance was in the trunk at the time of the stop. Despite no actual drugs being visible during the initial search, the evidence package and his own statements sealed his fate. A federal grand jury indicted him on February 19, 2015, on one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine under 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1).
After a bench trial on July 6, 2016, Judge Hamilton found Lawson guilty without a jury. The conviction hinged on circumstantial evidence, forensic testing, and Lawson’s own admissions. Federal prosecutors argued the quantity and packaging were clear indicators of large-scale distribution—not personal use.
In addition to the 214-month sentence, Judge Hamilton ordered a five-year term of supervised release upon Lawson’s eventual return to society. He has been in federal custody since his arrest and will serve the full sentence without the possibility of early release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sheila Armbrust and Aaron Wegner, with support from Michelle Alter and Yanira Osorio. The investigation was a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Livermore Police Department, underscoring the growing partnership between local and federal agencies in dismantling drug trafficking operations in Northern California.
