A harrowing case of domestic violence and animal cruelty has come to a close with the sentencing of Leslie Rector, 30, to 78 months in prison. Rector, a convicted felon, pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm after a violent incident on April 16, 2024.
According to court documents, Rector assaulted his girlfriend while intoxicated, causing extensive injuries to her face and head. The situation escalated further when he fatally shot his dog. The girlfriend managed to escape and sought help at a gas station, where she was met by officers from the Pacific Police Department.
The officers then contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, who took the girlfriend to the hospital for treatment and launched an investigation into the incident. Deputies visited Rector’s home, where they found a blood-spattered van, the body of the dog, and four firearms. As a convicted felon, Rector is barred from possessing firearms, making his actions a clear violation of the law.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Pacific Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine Hoag prosecuted the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel handed down the 78-month sentence to Rector, who will have to serve time for his heinous crimes. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the severity of domestic violence and animal abuse, and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
The case highlights the effectiveness of Project Safe Neighborhoods, which brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to tackle violent crime and make neighborhoods safer. Launched in 2021, the program is based on core principles of fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
In a statement, the Department of Justice emphasized the importance of programs like Project Safe Neighborhoods in reducing violent crime and gun violence. The sentencing of Leslie Rector serves as a testament to the commitment of law enforcement agencies to holding perpetrators accountable and creating safer communities for all.
