Lewis Bennett Gets 8 Years for Wife’s Sea Death

Lewis Bennett, 42, a dual citizen of Australia and the United Kingdom, was sentenced to 96 months in federal prison today for the involuntary manslaughter of his wife, Isabella Hellman, on the high seas. U.S. District Judge Federico A. Moreno handed down the sentence after Bennett pleaded guilty to the charge, closing a grim chapter in a nautical nightmare that began in May 2017.

According to court records, Bennett—an experienced sailor certified by the Royal Yachting Association as a Coastal Skipper—set sail from St. Maarten in late April 2017 with Hellman aboard the vessel “Surf Into Summer.” Though Bennett had extensive training, including in man overboard and night sailing protocols, Hellman had no formal certification or emergency sailing experience. On May 14, 2017, the couple left Cuba bound for Florida on Bennett’s catamaran.

That night, Bennett allowed Hellman to take the helm without requiring her to wear a life jacket, harness, or personal locator beacon. At around 8 p.m., she vanished. Bennett awoke hours later to a loud noise, found the helm abandoned, and discovered the rigging loose. He did not call out for her, did not deploy flares, and made no effort to search for her using the catamaran or its dinghy. He failed to activate emergency signals or use the satellite phone for help.

Instead, Bennett loaded a life raft with personal belongings—suitcases, duffel bags, food, water, silver coins, and flares—before abandoning the vessel. Only then, approximately 45 minutes after discovering Hellman missing, did he issue a distress call. The U.S. Coast Guard picked up the signal when he was about 26 nautical miles west of Cay Sal Bank, Bahamas, in international waters. A helicopter rescued him just after 4:30 a.m. and transported him to Marathon, Florida.

Coast Guard assets scoured 4,980 square miles over several days. The search was suspended on May 18, 2017. Hellman has not been found and has not contacted her family since. Evidence, including expert testimony, indicates the catamaran was intentionally scuttled—bolstering federal claims that Bennett’s actions went beyond negligence.

“This wasn’t an accident. It was a failure of duty, of conscience, and of basic human decency,” said U.S. Attorney Ariana Fajardo Orshan. FBI Miami and the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, Southeast Region, led the investigation. Bennett now faces eight years in federal prison, but questions about what truly happened in the dark waters of the Caribbean may never be answered.
