In a dramatic turn of events, Secretary of Labor William B. Davis’s attempt to fly from San Francisco to Chicago to greet British Prime Minister David Lloyd George almost ended in disaster. On October 17, 1923, Davis left the San Francisco airfield but soon found himself forced down after takeoff. Miraculously, the pilot managed to bring the plane down safely in Omaha, Nebraska, just hours after departing.
