Madera Woman Bleeds Victim Dry in $210K Bank Fraud

FRESNO, Calif. – A 39-year-old Madera woman has confessed to a cold-blooded scheme that drained a victim’s bank accounts of over $210,449. Leah Guillen pleaded guilty today to charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.

The scheme began in early 2018 when Guillen illegally obtained the personal details – name, Social Security number, and date of birth – of an unsuspecting individual. She didn’t just have the information; she weaponized it, impersonating the victim to gain unauthorized access to their accounts at Golden 1 Credit Union. It was a calculated, predatory move.

For three months, between April 18, 2018, and June 30, 2018, Guillen systematically plundered the victim’s finances. Using an illegally obtained debit card, she siphoned funds, leaving a trail of financial ruin in her wake. The total loss: a staggering $210,449. This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment crime; it was a sustained, deliberate attack on someone’s livelihood.

Federal investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Madera Police Department worked together to unravel the fraud and bring Guillen to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura D. Withers is leading the prosecution, determined to see Guillen held accountable for her actions. The collaborative effort demonstrates a commitment to tackling white-collar crime.

Guillen is now scheduled to face sentencing on February 28, 2022, before U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd. She faces a potential maximum sentence of 30 years behind bars and a $1 million fine. However, the ultimate penalty will rest with the judge, who will consider all relevant factors and federal sentencing guidelines.

While the guidelines provide a framework, the court retains discretion. This case serves as a stark reminder that identity theft and bank fraud are serious federal offenses with severe consequences. Guillen’s actions not only caused significant financial harm but also violated the trust and security of the victim, and the justice system will seek to ensure appropriate punishment is delivered.
