A Shawnee man walked into a U.S. Bank in Overland Park on September 22, 2015, and walked out with cash, a gun, and a one-way ticket to federal prison. Mamoudou U. Kaba, 21, Shawnee, pleaded guilty Tuesday to robbing the bank at 9900 West 87th Street, brandishing a firearm during the heist, and terrorizing tellers and customers in the process.
Kaba didn’t whisper demands or pass a note. He flashed a gun, aimed it at a bank clerk, and made it clear resistance wasn’t an option. Surveillance footage later showed him scanning the lobby, gun in hand, as employees scrambled and customers froze in fear. He grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash before bolting from the building.
He admitted in court to one count of bank robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. The charges carry a brutal penalty: up to 25 years for the robbery, and no less than seven years for the firearm charge—stacked consecutively, meaning Kaba could spend over three decades behind bars.
The heist sparked a joint manhunt by the Overland Park Police Department and the FBI. Evidence, including video and forensic leads, quickly narrowed in on Kaba. Federal prosecutors didn’t waste time building the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Zabel is handling the prosecution, underscoring the federal stakes of robbing a federally insured financial institution.
While no one was physically injured during the robbery, the psychological toll on victims is rarely measured in court. Witnesses described the gunman as calm but threatening, moving with purpose. The sight of a loaded weapon in a routine space like a bank rips through the illusion of safety, leaving lasting scars.
Sentencing is pending, but the message from U.S. Attorney Tom Beall’s office is clear: pull a gun on a bank, and the full weight of federal law will come down hard. For Mamoudou U. Kaba, the price of a single violent act could be the next quarter-century of his life.
