MANDEVILLE, LA – Marcia Denise Jordan, 45, of Mandeville, Louisiana, is facing federal charges for allegedly dodging taxes on nearly half a million dollars in income. United States Attorney Duane A. Evans announced today that Jordan has been charged in a one-count bill of information with tax evasion, a violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7201.
The feds allege Jordan willfully attempted to evade taxes for the 2011 tax year. According to the bill of information, Jordan submitted a bogus IRS Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. This form falsely claimed her total estimated tax liability was $0 and that she’d already paid the IRS $10,000. The reality? She allegedly raked in $493,266 in taxable income that year.
This wasn’t a simple oversight. Prosecutors say Jordan knew she hadn’t paid what she owed. The scheme, if proven, was a deliberate attempt to skirt her tax obligations. The IRS doesn’t take kindly to that, and neither does the Department of Justice.
If convicted, Jordan is looking at a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. Beyond the potential jail time, she could be slapped with a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release after serving her time, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. It’s a hefty price to pay for allegedly playing fast and loose with the tax code.
U.S. Attorney Evans was quick to point out that a bill of information is not a conviction. The burden of proof lies with the prosecution, and they must demonstrate Jordan’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. This case is far from closed.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, with the Internal Revenue Service, United States Secret Service, and the Slidell Police Department all contributing. Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri and DOJ Tax Division Trial Attorney Grace Albinson are leading the charge in prosecuting the case. Expect a fight – and Grimy Times will be there to cover every angle.
