Maple Heights Man Pleads Guilty to Arson Conspiracy

MAPLE HEIGHTS, OHIO – A 20-year-old man from Maple Heights has entered a guilty plea in federal court for his role in a conspiracy to commit arson during the May 30, 2020, demonstrations in downtown Cleveland. U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Brennan announced the charges against Timothy Goodner.

According to court documents, on the fateful night of the demonstrations, an individual set fire to a parking booth using paper towels and cardboard boxes. Another suspect handed Goodner a cardboard box, which he placed inside the booth. The flames were then intensified as more boxes were added.

Post-incident, the Cleveland Division of Police circulated images and videos to identify suspects, leading to Goodner’s identification through anonymous tips.

The investigation was a collaborative effort by the ATF and the Cleveland Division of Police, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly L. Galvin handling the prosecution. Sentencing has been deferred pending review of guidelines and statutory factors by a federal district court judge.

Goodner’s conviction underscores the gravity of the charges he faces and highlights the ongoing collaboration between local and federal law enforcement in combating crime during turbulent times.

This case has been a team effort, with thanks due to the Cleveland FBI, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol for their support.
