Bangor resident Mario Lee, a/k/a “Moe,” 33, pleaded guilty today to a federal heroin conspiracy charge, admitting his role in flooding the Bangor area with deadly drugs over a two-year crime spree. The former Bronx, New York, resident stood before U.S. District Court judges and confessed to orchestrating a widespread network to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin between August 2013 and September 2015.
Court records reveal Lee didn’t work alone. He conspired with local accomplices who acted as drivers, middlemen, and even landlords for heroin deals. Co-conspirators introduced buyers, chauffeured Lee to transactions, and opened their homes as pop-up distribution hubs—all paid in kind with the very poison they helped circulate. The operation stretched beyond Bangor into surrounding rural communities, deepening the opioid crisis in already vulnerable areas.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel B. Casey, who prosecuted the case, detailed how Lee used his connections and mobility to maintain a steady heroin pipeline. “This wasn’t casual dealing,” Casey said. “This was a structured, ongoing criminal enterprise that exploited addiction for profit.” Federal prosecutors emphasized that Lee’s actions directly fueled overdose spikes linked to contaminated batches during the peak of the opioid epidemic.
Lee’s criminal past now seals his fate. Because of a prior drug trafficking conviction in New York, he faces a mandatory minimum of ten years in federal prison—and possibly life behind bars. On top of that, he’s staring down up to eight years of supervised release and a fine of $8,000,000. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date, with no plea deal shielding him from the harshest penalties.
The takedown was the result of a joint investigation by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Investigators relied on wiretaps, informant testimony, and controlled buys to dismantle the network. Sources say multiple co-conspirators are already in custody or cooperating with federal authorities in related prosecutions.
U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II issued a blunt warning in light of the plea: “We’re not looking the other way while drug traffickers turn our neighborhoods into battlegrounds.” For now, Mario Lee’s reign as ‘Moe’—dealer, distributor, and enabler—is over. The federal system will decide how many years he pays for it.
