CHICAGO – Maurice D. Lee Jr., 32, of Chicago, is facing a potential lifetime behind bars after a federal grand jury indicted him for a brazen two-week crime spree in May 2024. Lee is accused of terrorizing Chicago residents with two separate carjackings and robbing two credit unions located on the University of Illinois Chicago campus. The feds say he didn’t just take possessions, he wielded a handgun in every single incident, turning everyday errands into life-threatening situations.
The indictment details a pattern of violence beginning on May 10, 2024, when Lee allegedly stole a Toyota from a driver before turning his attention to a nearby credit union, relieving it of an undisclosed amount of cash. Just a week later, on May 17, 2024, he allegedly repeated the same horrifying sequence: another Toyota snatched from its owner, followed by a robbery at a different credit union on the UIC campus. Witnesses reportedly described a similar MO in both incidents – a cold-blooded display of force and intimidation.
Federal prosecutors are coming down hard. The charges against Lee include two counts of carjacking, each carrying a potential 15-year sentence. He’s also facing two counts of robbery, with each conviction potentially adding another 20 years to his prison term. But the real kicker? Four counts of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. Each of those carries a mandatory minimum of seven years, stacking up to a staggering 28-year minimum sentence if convicted on all counts. This isn’t a slap on the wrist; it’s a full-on attempt to lock this guy up for a very long time.
Lee was initially taken into state custody shortly after the second robbery, but federal authorities finally took him into custody last month to face these charges. He’s currently being held without bond, awaiting his day in court. An arraignment is scheduled for July 7, 2025, at 9:45 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel A. Fuentes. Expect a tough fight; Lee’s lawyers will undoubtedly try to poke holes in the government’s case, but the evidence – and the fear he instilled in his victims – paints a grim picture.
The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Andrew S. Boutros, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office. Both agencies are working closely with the University of Illinois Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Police Department on the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Asheeka Desai is leading the prosecution. While the indictment is a significant step, it’s crucial to remember that Lee is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case closely, bringing you updates as they develop. The streets of Chicago are already tough enough; individuals like Maurice Lee Jr. only add to the danger.
