Meth Man Schrand Led Cops on Wild KC Chase

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A reckless pursuit through Kansas City streets culminated in the arrest of George S. Schrand, Jr., 35, of Independence, Missouri, and a federal indictment for methamphetamine trafficking. The chase, initiated by Independence police on March 13, 2017, revealed a substantial quantity of the drug and a clear intent to distribute, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Larson.

Schrand now faces federal charges after a grand jury returned an indictment replacing a prior criminal complaint. The indictment alleges Schrand possessed methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. The initial encounter began when an Independence officer witnessed Schrand, behind the wheel of a 1996 Ford Mustang, aggressively accelerating from the intersection of East Golf Avenue and Home Street.

What followed was a dangerous high-speed chase, with Schrand allegedly reaching 80-to-90 miles per hour through residential neighborhoods and busy city streets. The affidavit details a brazen disregard for public safety, with Schrand swerving into oncoming traffic and narrowly avoiding a collision. Police eventually deployed stop sticks, disabling the Mustang in Kansas City, but Schrand wasn’t done running.

Abandoning his vehicle, Schrand fled on foot, leaping over a fence near 18th Street and Bennington. He thought he’d lost his pursuers, but an Independence K-9 unit quickly tracked him down, discovering him hiding under a vehicle in the 1900 block of South Ewing Street. Nearby, officers recovered a black backpack dropped during the escape, containing approximately 338 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and eight tablets of Alprazolam (generic Valium).

A search of Schrand himself yielded another 4.4 grams of methamphetamine and a staggering $20,950 in cash. The evidence paints a picture of a calculated operation, not simple possession. Larson was quick to state that the indictment is merely an accusation, and Schrand is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a federal jury.

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Moeder, with the investigation spearheaded by the Independence, Missouri Police Department. This isn’t just about a chase; it’s about taking a significant drug trafficker off the streets and disrupting the flow of methamphetamine into our communities. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it progresses through the federal court system.
