Mexican National Gets 7 Months for Illegal Reentry

HARRISBURG, PA – Leonardo Mendoza-Zavala, a 44-year-old citizen of Mexico, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment yesterday by United States District Judge Jennifer P. Wilson. The charge? Illegal reentry into the United States, a crime federal authorities are cracking down on as part of a broader initiative to control the border and dismantle transnational criminal organizations.

The case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott R. Ford, reveals a pattern of criminal behavior and disregard for U.S. immigration laws. Mendoza-Zavala’s troubles didn’t begin with this latest offense. Court records show prior convictions in Texas for attempt to take a weapon from an officer, resisting arrest, and, alarmingly, terroristic threats. These convictions led to his removal from the United States on January 6, 2020, via Laredo, Texas.

But Mendoza-Zavala didn’t stay away. He brazenly reentered the country illegally, bypassing legal channels and flouting the deportation order. His freedom lasted until June 21, 2025, when officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Removal Operations, working in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police, apprehended him in the parking lot of a Lebanon County motel. The arrest was a direct result of targeted enforcement efforts aimed at individuals who repeatedly violate immigration laws.

Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating that such cases are not merely administrative violations but criminal acts with consequences. The seven-month sentence sends a clear message: illegally reentering the United States after deportation carries significant penalties.

This case is notably part of “Operation Take Back America,” a sweeping nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice. The operation aims to “repel the invasion of illegal immigration,” as described by DOJ officials, and dismantle the cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) that facilitate it. It streamlines resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods, indicating a full-court press on border security and criminal enforcement.

While the sentence may seem short to some, federal authorities argue it’s a crucial step in protecting communities from individuals with a history of violence and criminal activity. Mendoza-Zavala’s case is a stark reminder of the challenges facing law enforcement on the front lines of immigration enforcement and the ongoing fight against transnational crime.
