Michael Bermudez, a/k/a Michael J. Morales, 35, of Cranston, pleaded guilty today to trafficking nearly 140 grams of heroin laced with fentanyl and 153 grams of cocaine. The admission in U.S. District Court in Providence marks a direct hit in the ongoing battle against the opioid crisis gripping Rhode Island.
Bermudez appeared before U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr., and admitted to one count of possession with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin and one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The charges stem from a targeted raid conducted on October 6, 2016, when Cranston Police and the Rhode Island DEA Drug Task Force executed a court-authorized search of Bermudez’s home.
Inside, authorities seized approximately 6,600 individually packaged heroin packets laced with fentanyl—a synthetic opioid up to 100 times more potent than morphine—alongside 153 grams of cocaine. The raid followed an investigation involving multiple controlled buys, confirming Bermudez’s role as a key supplier in the local drug trade.
“This criminal conduct of this defendant, and others like him, is what is causing our opioid public health crisis,” said U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha. “Fentanyl is a killer, plain and simple. Every one of those 6,600 fentanyl laced heroin packets was a potential fatal dose.”
Bermudez is no stranger to the justice system. In 2009, he was convicted of federal fraud charges. At the time of his 2016 arrest, he was on state probation after a September 2015 conviction in Rhode Island Superior Court for drug trafficking. He has remained in federal custody since his arrest.
He faces a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison for the heroin charge—up to 40 years—and up to 20 years for the cocaine charge, with a mandatory 3-year supervised release term. Fines could reach $5 million for the heroin count and $1 million for cocaine. Sentencing is scheduled for April 12, 2017. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr.
