Michael G. Williams Gets 8 Years for Child Porn Receipt

Michael G. Williams, 48, of Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, is going away for a long time—8 years behind federal bars—for receiving child pornography in a case that laid bare the digital trail of his criminal obsession.

Williams was sentenced to 96 months in prison by United States District Judge Gustave Diamond in Pittsburgh, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, after pleading guilty to Receipt of Material Depicting the Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. The charge stems from a concentrated seven-day spree in June 2015, during which Williams knowingly downloaded and possessed graphic videos and digital images involving minors in sexually explicit conduct.

Federal prosecutors detailed how, between June 18 and June 25, 2015, Williams accessed and transferred child sexual abuse material—depictions produced through the exploitation of children. The files were traced through digital forensics, linking him directly to the receipt and retention of the illegal content on his devices.

Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar handled the prosecution, pushing for accountability in a case that underscored the reach of online predators. U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that each image represents real, ongoing abuse of a child.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Office of the Pennsylvania Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose cyber units tracked Williams’ digital footprints and secured enough evidence for a federal indictment. Authorities made no secret of the growing threat posed by internet-facilitated child exploitation.

This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, the Justice Department’s nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual abuse. The program leverages federal, state, and local partnerships to dismantle networks of exploitation and rescue victims. For more on the initiative, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
