Michigan’s crime landscape in 2018 was marked by a disturbing trend: a rise in violent crime. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, the state experienced a 6.4% increase in aggravated assaults and a 6.2% increase in murders, compared to the previous year. These numbers mirrored a national trend, as violent crime rates continued to climb across the United States.
In 2018, Michigan was not an outlier in this regard. The nation as a whole saw a 3.3% increase in violent crime, with cities like Chicago and Baltimore experiencing some of the highest rates of murder and non-negligent manslaughter. The FBI’s UCR data revealed that 2018 was the second consecutive year that violent crime rates had risen in the US, following a period of decline from 2014 to 2016.
The FBI’s UCR program, which collects and analyzes crime data from law enforcement agencies across the country, reported that Michigan’s overall crime rate in 2018 was 3,454.1 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants. This was a 2.1% increase from the previous year. Property crime, which includes theft, burglary, and arson, also saw a significant increase, with a 2.5% rise in reported incidents.
Murder and non-negligent manslaughter, however, were the most significant concern in Michigan in 2018. The state’s murder rate rose by 6.2%, with 556 reported incidents. The majority of these murders were committed with a firearm, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in Michigan. The FBI’s UCR data also revealed that the state’s murder clearance rate, which measures the percentage of murders solved by law enforcement, remained relatively low at 55.1%.
As the nation continues to grapple with rising violent crime rates, Michigan’s experience in 2018 serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges facing law enforcement and communities. The state’s crime landscape is complex, with factors such as poverty, inequality, and access to mental health services contributing to the rise in violent crime. In 2019 and beyond, Michigan will need to address these underlying issues in order to reverse the trend and create safer communities for its residents.
