Minneapolis Felon Cortez Lamon Shipp Gets 42-Month Sentence for Gas Station Shooting

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A Minneapolis man, Cortez Lamon Shipp, 40, was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for his role in a gas station shooting that left 11 discharged cartridge casings on the street.

Court documents revealed that on August 5, 2019, Minneapolis police responded to reports of shots fired at a station near Lowry Avenue and Logan Avenue North. Video surveillance footage showed Shipp passing an object to codefendant Johnnie Lamar Haynes outside the gas station after a prior confrontation involving Haynes and two others.

Haynes began shooting at their vehicle as it drove away, with bullets striking a nearby business, prompting employees to take cover. Shipp pleaded guilty on January 8, 2020, to one count of possessing ammunition as a felon, having previously been convicted of felony charges in Hennepin County.

Haynes was later convicted by a federal jury for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a felon and is set to be sentenced in early 2022. The case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a joint initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through comprehensive solutions.

The investigation leading to Shipp’s conviction was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Minneapolis Police Department, with prosecution handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Calhoun-Lopez.
