Minnesota Man Moore Sentenced for Role in Massive Fentanyl Ring

A federal judge in Minnesota has handed down a significant sentence to 32-year-old Derek Moore, a resident of Minneapolis, for his role in a massive fentanyl trafficking operation.

According to court documents, Moore was arrested in 2025 as part of a joint investigation by local and federal authorities. The case, led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), uncovered a vast network of fentanyl dealers operating in the Twin Cities area.

Moore, who was 29 at the time of his arrest, was charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. He pleaded guilty to the charges in February 2026.

In court, prosecutors presented evidence of Moore’s involvement in the distribution of over 1 kilogram of fentanyl, a highly potent and deadly synthetic opioid. The investigation revealed that Moore had sold fentanyl to multiple customers in the Minneapolis area, resulting in at least one overdose death.

U.S. District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson sentenced Moore to 10 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down after a lengthy hearing, during which Moore’s attorney argued for leniency due to his client’s lack of prior convictions.

However, prosecutors argued that Moore’s actions had devastating consequences, putting numerous lives at risk. In a statement to the court, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Karen Clark, said, ‘Moore’s actions were a significant contributor to the fentanyl crisis in Minnesota, and his sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes.’
