Government Funds Theft Rocks Community
A shocking case of theft has rocked the small community of Mission, South Dakota, as 48-year-old Donna Peterson pleaded guilty to one count of Theft of Government Funds.
According to court documents, Peterson, a former employee of Costello Company Property Management, embezzled $32,723.36 from the Sunrise Village Apartment Complex where she served as manager. The funds were meant for rent subsidy payments provided by the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Agency for tenants who met certain income requirements.
The theft took place between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007, when Peterson received cash from tenants but failed to deposit it into the Sunrise Village bank account.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dennis R. Holmes is leading the prosecution, while the investigation was conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General-Investigations.
Peterson faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release. A presentence investigation has been ordered, with a sentencing date set for June 3, 2013.
The case has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many wondering how such a brazen crime could have gone undetected for so long.
Peterson was released on bond pending sentencing, leaving many to question the severity of her punishment.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this scandal, one thing is clear: the trust has been broken, and it will take time to repair.
