MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Kevin Carter Kieckhefer, 35, of Tupelo, Oklahoma, is facing a substantial prison sentence after admitting to illegally possessing ammunition. The plea, entered today in federal court, confirms Kieckhefer knowingly held 25 rounds of .223 ammunition on July 19, 2023, a clear violation of federal law given his prior criminal history.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma revealed that Kieckhefer pleaded guilty to one count of Felon in Possession of Ammunition. This charge carries a potential punishment of up to 15 years behind bars and a hefty $250,000.00 fine. Details of the prior conviction that disqualifies Kieckhefer from possessing firearms or ammunition were not immediately released.
The investigation that led to Kieckhefer’s arrest and subsequent plea was a coordinated effort between multiple law enforcement agencies. Detectives from the Coal County Sheriff’s Office, troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) all contributed to building the case against him. The agencies haven’t released details of how Kieckhefer came to their attention.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson accepted the guilty plea and has ordered a presentence investigation report to be compiled. This report will provide a detailed account of Kieckhefer’s background, criminal history, and other relevant factors to assist the sentencing judge in determining an appropriate punishment. The report is standard procedure in federal cases.
Kieckhefer remains in custody, held by the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting his sentencing date. A U.S. District Court Judge will ultimately decide the length of his sentence, taking into consideration the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and all applicable statutory factors. Expect a harsh penalty given the nature of the crime and the potential danger posed by a convicted felon possessing ammunition.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dak T. Cohen and Lewis M. Reagan are prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States. This conviction highlights the ongoing commitment of federal and state law enforcement to keep firearms and ammunition out of the hands of those legally prohibited from possessing them. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing when it is announced.
