Mitchell Man Charged in Federal Kidnapping, Officer Assault

A Mitchell man is facing life behind bars after being indicted on federal charges of kidnapping, assaulting a federal officer, and using a dangerous weapon during a violent confrontation. Corey Johnson, 30, was named in a grand jury indictment unsealed December 14, 2016, following a violent incident that brought federal law enforcement to the scene.

On November 2, 2016, Johnson allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a victim with a dangerous weapon in Mitchell, South Dakota. The attack escalated when two U.S. Marshals arrived to intervene. According to the indictment, Johnson forcibly resisted, opposed, and impeded the officers, launching a physical assault that endangered their lives and obstructed their duties.

Johnson appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on December 20, 2016, where he entered a plea of not guilty to all counts. He was immediately remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he remains pending trial. No trial date has been set.

If convicted, Corey Johnson, 30, faces up to life in federal prison, a fine of $750,000, 11 years of supervised release, and a $300 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The court may also impose restitution based on the extent of harm caused to the victims.

The charges stem from a joint investigation led by the U.S. Marshals Service, who have been tight-lipped about operational details but confirmed Johnson’s actions directly threatened federal authority. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case, underscoring the federal government’s aggressive stance on attacks against law enforcement.

The indictment marks a serious escalation in what authorities describe as a violent criminal episode. Though Johnson is presumed innocent until proven guilty, federal prosecutors are building a case that could land him in prison for decades. The outcome will hinge on evidence from the scene, witness testimony, and the conduct of the alleged victims during the charged events.
