MS-13 Leaders Convicted in Newark Murder-for-Initiation Plot

NEWARK, N.J. — A federal jury has convicted three El Salvadoran nationals in a brutal murder-for-initiation plot tied to MS-13, the violent international gang. Juan Pablo Escalante-Melgar, aka Humilde, 31, Elmer Cruz-Diaz, aka Locote, 33, and Oscar Sanchez-Aguilar, aka Snappy 25, 25, were found guilty of RICO charges including murder in aid of racketeering, stemming from the execution-style killing of 19-year-old José Urias-Hernandez on July 1, 2015.

Prosecutors proved that Escalante-Melgar and Sanchez-Aguilar ordered a junior gang member to carry out the murder so a recruit could earn full membership in MS-13. The victim, José Urias-Hernandez, was shot once in the back of the head as he entered his apartment building in Newark—killed in cold blood due to mistaken identity. He was not a gang member, nor a rival. The act was pure savagery, driven by the gang’s internal code of violence and loyalty.

The convictions come after years of investigation that began with immigration arrests and evolved into a sprawling federal case. Between September 2014 and October 2015, the trio engaged in a campaign of terror, orchestrating extortion, drug trafficking, witness tampering, and violent enforcement—all under the banner of MS-13. The gang, founded in Los Angeles and now entrenched across Central America and the U.S., operates through autonomous cliques bound by a rigid hierarchy and a standing order to kill rivals.

Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig condemned the gang’s brutality: “MS-13 is a violent multinational criminal organization that engages in drug trafficking, intimidation, and the murder of witnesses, rival gang members, and – as happened here – innocent victims.” She emphasized that while justice won’t bring José Urias-Hernandez back, it ensures these defendants will rot behind bars for their crimes.

Law enforcement officials hailed the verdict as a direct hit to MS-13’s operations in New Jersey. FBI Special Agent in Charge George M. Crouch Jr. credited “a multi-agency investigation” with dismantling the cell. ICE-ERO Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris stressed that the cooperation between federal, state, and local agencies was pivotal in taking “vicious criminals” off the streets. HSI Special Agent in Charge Jason Molina called the murder “senseless violence” fueled by mistaken identity—a common, deadly flaw in MS-13’s bloodthirsty culture.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez called the conviction a “major win” for public safety. The case, she said, reflects what relentless collaboration can achieve. As MS-13 continues to plague communities across the U.S., federal prosecutors and investigators vow to pursue every lead, dismantle every clique, and hold every member accountable—no matter how deep the gang burrows into American soil.
