New Jersey Crime Plummets in 2019, But Violent Crime Still a Concern

New Jersey saw a significant drop in overall crime rates in 2019, a trend mirrored across the nation. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, the state reported a 4.8% decrease in violent crimes and a 7.1% drop in property crimes compared to the previous year. The decline brings New Jersey’s violent crime rate to 2.8 incidents per 1,000 inhabitants, while the property crime rate dipped to 1,444.6 incidents per 100,000 residents.

This downward trend is consistent with national crime rates, which also experienced a decline in 2019. The FBI reported a 3.0% decrease in violent crimes and a 3.3% drop in property crimes nationwide. Despite the overall decline, violent crimes like homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault continued to plague communities. In 2019, New Jersey saw 325 reported homicides, a 12% increase from 2018.

Nationally, violent crime rates had been trending downward since peaking in the early 1990s. However, the 2019 data showed a slight uptick in homicides, with 16,214 reported incidents across the United States. The FBI attributed this increase to factors such as gang violence, substance abuse, and firearms.

Substance abuse and gang activity were also contributing factors to the crime rates in New Jersey. The state’s proximity to major cities like New York and Philadelphia, which have struggled with gang violence, may have played a role in the increase in violent crime. Moreover, the opioid crisis, which ravaged the nation, also had a significant impact on New Jersey’s crime rates.

The UCR program, established in 1930, collects and analyzes crime data from law enforcement agencies across the United States. The data provides a comprehensive picture of crime trends and informs law enforcement strategies. While the decline in crime rates is a positive trend, the persistence of violent crime highlights the need for continued efforts to address underlying issues driving these crimes.
