NOLA Felons Busted with Firearms

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Two New Orleans residents are facing federal charges after being indicted on February 2, 2023, for violating federal gun control laws. The feds say MICHAEL WILLIAMS, 28, and NOLAN LONG, 31, were caught with firearms despite their prior felony convictions, a clear no-no under federal law.

The indictment alleges that both men knowingly possessed firearms while being prohibited due to their criminal histories. Details of how they came to possess the weapons remain tight-lipped, but sources indicate the investigation stemmed from a separate, ongoing probe into street-level narcotics activity in the 7th Ward. We’ll be digging deeper into that connection.

If found guilty, both WILLIAMS and LONG are looking at a stiff sentence: a maximum of 15 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to 3 years of supervised release after serving their time. A mandatory $100 special assessment fee will also be tacked onto any penalty. Don’t expect a slap on the wrist here.

U.S. Attorney Evans was quick to point out, as is standard, that an indictment is not a conviction. “This is merely an accusation,” Evans stated, “and the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.” But the message is clear: the feds are taking gun crime seriously in the Crescent City.

This case is being touted as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice launched a revamped PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement. Translation: more boots on the ground and a push for longer sentences.

The investigation was a joint effort by the New Orleans Police Department, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, and the FBI. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman is handling the prosecution. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and bring you updates as they develop. Expect a fight – these guys aren’t going down without one.
