NORFOLK, VA – James Edward Sweat, 40, is looking at serious time after a federal jury found him guilty yesterday of running a drug operation out of his Norfolk home and illegally packing firearms. The bust, which went down December 18th, wasn’t a simple weed bust; cops found enough to nail Sweat on multiple federal charges.
According to court records, a search of Sweat’s place turned up a shotgun, a handgun, six magazines – including a high-capacity 100-round drum – and enough ammo to make any officer nervous. That wasn’t all. Agents also discovered three full kits for manufacturing drugs, 14.3 grams of crack cocaine, and fentanyl already packaged for street sales.
Sweat’s history didn’t help his case. He’s already been convicted of abduction, two counts of robbery, and using a firearm during a felony. That made possessing any firearm a federal offense.
Prosecutors are seeking a minimum five-year sentence, but Sweat could face life behind bars when he’s sentenced July 14th. The case was investigated by the ATF Washington Field Division, with help from the Chesapeake and Norfolk police departments.
This case falls under “Operation Take Back America,” a broad DOJ initiative aimed at battling cartels and “violent crime.”
