NORFOLK, VA – James Edward Sweat, 40, is looking at serious time after a federal jury found him guilty yesterday of turning his Norfolk home into a drug den and illegally stashing firearms. The bust, conducted December 18, 2025, turned up a cache of weapons – a shotgun, handgun, and six magazines, including a high-capacity 100-round drum – along with the tools to cook up drugs, 14.3 grams of crack, and fentanyl already bagged for street sales.
Sweat wasn’t just dealing. He was a previously convicted felon, meaning he wasn’t legally allowed to own a firearm or ammunition. His rap sheet includes abduction, two robbery counts, and two prior convictions for using a gun while committing a felony.
Prosecutors are pushing for a mandatory minimum of five years, but Sweat could face life behind bars when sentenced July 14. The judge will weigh sentencing guidelines and other factors before handing down the final punishment.
ATF agents with the Washington Field Division led the investigation, backed up by the Chesapeake and Norfolk Police Departments. The case is tied into “Operation Take Back America,” a broad DOJ initiative targeting cartels and violent crime – a typical framing for these things.
