North Miami Man Sentenced to 3 Years for Identity Theft

A North Miami resident has been sentenced to 40 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for possessing over 1,000 pieces of personal identifying information of other individuals.

Randy Jacques, 28, had previously pled guilty to one count of possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices and one count of aggravated identity theft. The charges stem from an investigation related to over 200 fraudulent telephone calls made to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

According to court documents, law enforcement searched Jacques’ residence in August 2015 and recovered a laptop containing documents with the personal identifying information of 1,147 unique individuals, including their names, dates of birth, and social security numbers.

An individual victim confirmed that their personal information was found on Jacques’ laptop without their authorization.

U.S. Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg stated, ‘The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida is committed to combatting identity theft fraud schemes that compromise local and national taxpayer identities.’

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joshua S. Rothstein, and the investigative efforts of the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance were commended.
