New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its unlawful termination of $8 billion in congressionally approved energy grants. The AG’s office claims that these cuts, made during the 2025 government shutdown, were politically motivated and aimed at blue states.
The lawsuit, joined by 12 other attorneys general, argues that the administration violated federal law by freezing obligated funds and arbitrarily terminating grants for critical infrastructure projects across the country.
Attorney General James asserts that these cuts are not just an attack on climate initiatives but also on New Yorkers’ wallets and energy grid reliability. She emphasizes that Congress holds the purse strings and that Americans deserve relief from soaring utility bills and job insecurity.
The terminated grants were intended to modernize the electric grid, improve building efficiency, create jobs, and reduce pollution. The abrupt termination has halted projects midstream, causing layoffs and leaving states like New York unable to proceed with key infrastructure upgrades.
James and her coalition accuse the White House of using the government shutdown as a means to punish states with Democratic leadership. They argue that the Department of Energy’s use of a vague internal policy to justify the cuts, along with a complete halt in communication with awardees, is an abuse of power and a violation of the Administrative Procedure Act.
The lawsuit seeks to reverse these cuts and release the funding necessary for states to meet their rising energy needs. It represents a legal challenge to the Trump administration’s approach to energy policy, which critics say has been short-sighted and damaging to the nation’s infrastructure and economy.
