Odessa Man Stole $63,359.92 in VA Funds

Tampa, Florida – In a brazen act of theft, Anthony J. Salomone, a 64-year-old man from Odessa, has pleaded guilty to stealing $63,359.92 in Veterans Affairs funds.

According to court documents, Salomone’s mother received VA benefits as the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran. The benefits were direct deposited into the mother’s checking account to which Salomone had access via a power of attorney. Salomone’s mother died on October 2, 2017, but he did not report her death to the VA, which continued to deposit monthly benefits for her until March 2022, thinking she was still alive.

Salomone took those benefits, to which he was not entitled, and spent them on his own personal and business expenses. The theft of government property is a serious offense, and Salomone faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.

The case was investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Inspector General’s Southeast Field Office. It is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew Del Mastro and Suzanne Huyler.

The theft of VA funds is a betrayal of trust, and it’s disturbing to think that someone would take advantage of a system meant to help those who have served our country. Salomone’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and integrity in our justice system.

Salomone’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11, 2024. In the meantime, he will have to face the consequences of his actions and hope that the court shows him mercy.
