LATHAM, NY – A pedestrian is dead and questions are mounting after New York Attorney General Letitia James released security camera footage detailing the moments leading up to the death of John Bonds. The footage, made public July 9, 2025, shows Bonds being struck by a vehicle driven by an off-duty officer with the Colonie Police Department (CPD) on May 27, 2025.
The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. on Old Loudon Road in Latham. Bonds, whose age was not immediately released, was walking when the vehicle, operated by the unidentified CPD officer, collided with him. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries on June 2, 2025, eleven days after the crash.
Attorney General James’ office, through its Office of Special Investigation (OSI), is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The release of the footage is part of a push for transparency, according to a statement from the AG’s office. “This footage follows Attorney General James’ directive that camera footage obtained by her office during an OSI investigation be released to the public to increase transparency and strengthen public trust in these matters,” the statement reads.
OSI’s mandate, stemming from New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, requires assessment of all incidents where a law enforcement officer—on or off-duty—may have caused a death. This includes situations involving armed or unarmed individuals, those in custody or not. If the initial assessment suggests officer involvement, a full investigation is launched, as is the case here. The AG’s office emphasized that the release of the footage does not indicate guilt or innocence.
Grimy Times has learned that the officer involved has not been publicly identified, and no charges have been filed as of this publication. The OSI investigation remains ongoing, with investigators meticulously reviewing the footage, conducting interviews, and gathering evidence to determine whether criminal charges are warranted. The lack of immediate information is fueling local outrage and calls for a swift and thorough investigation.
