A 54-year-old Ohio man is facing up to 10 years in prison after admitting to failing to update his sex offender registration in West Virginia.
Scott Allen Schafer, of Millersburg, Ohio, pled guilty today to violating the federal law requiring sex offenders to update their registration information.
According to court documents, Schafer was required to register as a sex offender due to a prior conviction involving a minor in Ohio in 2018.
At the time of his conviction, Schafer was living in Ritchie County, West Virginia, but he failed to update his registration information as required by law.
The United States Marshals Service and the West Virginia State Police investigated Schafer’s failure to update his registration, leading to the federal charges.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Wagner is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the proceedings in federal district court.
Schafer’s sentence will be determined by the judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with federal laws requiring sex offenders to maintain accurate and up-to-date registration information.
