Cincinnati resident Adrian Schmidt, 25, is facing serious charges after being arrested for his role in the January 6th Capitol riot. The feds allege Schmidt actively obstructed law enforcement during the chaotic breach, adding to the growing list of individuals held accountable for the attack on American democracy.
Schmidt is charged with obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder – a felony – alongside multiple misdemeanor counts. These include unlawful entry into a restricted building, disorderly conduct both inside and outside the Capitol, and illegally parading within the building itself. He was initially processed in the Southern District of Ohio after his arrest.
According to court documents and reviewed video footage, Schmidt wasn’t just *present* at the riot; he was an active participant. The evidence reportedly shows him at the forefront of the crowd, physically pushing past police officers and breaching security fencing as it gave way. He then allegedly joined others in aggressively pushing against riot shields held by law enforcement on the Lower West Terrace.
The footage doesn’t stop there. Schmidt is seen entering the Capitol building, briefly exiting, and then re-entering through the Upper West Terrace doors – demonstrating a clear intent to remain within the restricted area and continue the disruption. This wasn’t a casual stroll; it was a deliberate act of defiance against the rule of law.
Federal prosecutors from the District of Columbia are leading the case, with support from the Department of Justice’s Counterterrorism Section. The FBI’s Cincinnati and Washington Field Offices spearheaded the investigation, with crucial assistance from the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department. The Southern District of Ohio and Eastern District of Kentucky also provided support.
Schmidt is one of 1,069+ individuals arrested nationwide in connection with the January 6th breach. Over 350 of those arrested are accused of directly assaulting or impeding law enforcement officers. The investigation remains very much active, with the feds continuing to hunt down all those responsible for the attack. Anyone with information is urged to contact the authorities.
