A 39-year-old Omaha man, Jose L. Velez, Sr., has taken a drastic turn for the worse in his life after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in a federal court in Sioux City, Iowa.
On June 12, 2024, Velez, a notorious figure in the Omaha underworld, stood before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand and admitted to knowingly and intentionally possessing with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine and 50 grams or more of actual (pure) methamphetamine.
The incident took place on or about February 23, 2024, marking the beginning of a downward spiral for Velez. The charges against him carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, along with a $10,000,000 fine, and 5 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher, who has been relentless in his pursuit of justice. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the North Central Iowa Drug Task Force, the Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Office, the Clear Lake Police Department, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Mason City Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa DCI Laboratory, and the Cerro Gordo County Attorney’s Office.
The United States Marshal has Velez in custody, and he will remain there pending sentencing. The court has scheduled a presentence report, after which sentencing will be set. Velez’s fate hangs in the balance, and the possibility of a life sentence looms large.
As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that Velez’s actions have had far-reaching consequences. His decision to engage in the illicit trade of methamphetamine has put him squarely in the crosshairs of the law. The full extent of his involvement remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his life will never be the same.
