Orlando Heroin Kingpin Angel Manuel Fontanez Gets 17 Years

Angel Manuel Fontanez, 32, of Clermont, and his brother Alexis Fontanez Nieves, 29, of Orlando, were sentenced to 17 years and 2 months and 14 years in federal prison, respectively, after admitting their roles in a ruthless heroin trafficking ring that flooded Orlando’s tourist corridor with deadly drugs. Fontanez pleaded guilty on October 12, 2016; Nieves followed on October 21, 2016. Both faced the hammer of federal justice for conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute heroin.

The operation, self-styled as ‘La Compania’ or ‘The Company,’ functioned like a 24/7 drug factory, using a rotating ‘heroin line’ — a phone number passed between members — to coordinate sales in the high-traffic International Drive area. Customers dialed in, placed orders, and runners delivered street-level bundles around the clock. The system was built for evasion, with two 12-hour shifts operating every single day, feeding addiction and fueling violence across Central Florida.

Fontanez was the undisputed leader, traveling out-of-state to procure multi-kilogram loads of heroin, which he brought back to the Orlando area, repackaged, and distributed through a network of foot soldiers. He didn’t just deal — he managed, directed, and profited from an entire criminal enterprise. Under his command, the organization moved roughly one kilogram of heroin every two weeks. Court records show he was responsible for distributing at least 30 kilograms over the course of the conspiracy.

His brother, Nieves, was the operational backbone. He broke down bulk heroin into baggies, supplied both heroin and cocaine to street-level dealers, and, after Fontanez’s arrest, took full control — recruiting new members, running the heroin line, collecting cash, and maintaining supply lines. Nieves oversaw the continued operation of the ring and distributed at least 10 kilograms of heroin under his watch.

The takedown, dubbed ‘La Compania’ by federal investigators, was the result of a sprawling Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation. The Drug Enforcement Administration led the charge, backed by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, U.S. Marshals, Homeland Security Investigations, Orlando and Kissimmee police, the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation, Osceola County Investigative Bureau, and Virginia State Police — a rare coalition of local and federal muscle aimed at dismantling entrenched drug networks.

Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Searle prosecuted the case, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to dismantling high-level trafficking organizations. The OCDETF program, designed to target the nation’s most dangerous drug syndicates, scored a major victory with these convictions. But on the streets of Orlando, the damage done by ‘La Compania’ lingers — in broken families, overdose deaths, and neighborhoods still fighting to breathe free of the poison Fontanez and Nieves sold for profit.
